60 years, 35+ in Service: A Birthday Reflection
As I celebrate another birthday on July 30, I find myself looking back over a span of more than three and a half decades in the nonprofit sector. Sixty years of life, and more than 35 years of service. When I first stepped into this work, my heart was full of zeal, optimism, and a burning desire to change communities for the better. I wanted to feed the hungry, mentor the youth, and uplift the underserved.
Like many of the founders and grassroots leaders I work with today at Beyond Existing Enterprises (BEE), I believed that pure passion and a good heart were all it took to sustain a mission.
It didn't take long to realize that while passion sparks the movement, structure sustains it.
The Lesson That Changed Everything
Early in my career, I watched well-intentioned organizations: many of them incredible faith-based ministries and Black-led community groups: burn out. They poured their souls into programs, but struggled with messy finances, missing board governance, compliance slip-ups, and unsustainable funding models. The founders were exhausted, constantly on the brink of closing their doors despite doing vital, life-changing work.
That is when the hard truth became clear: Passion alone isn’t enough. Systems, stability, and compliance build legacies.
Over the years, my mission shifted from simply doing the work to teaching others how to build infrastructure. I realized that if we want our communities to thrive for generations, we cannot rely on temporary fixes or guesswork. We need solid ground to stand on. As I often tell the leaders who walk through our doors, "Freedom is Found in the Foundation."

Celebrating 60 Years by Looking Forward
Reaching this milestone birthday on July 30 fills me with profound gratitude. I have seen miracles happen in church basements, community centers, and grassroots campaigns. I have watched first-time founders transform into confident, visionary CEOs of thriving community development corporations.
Yet, my greatest joy is knowing that the work is far from finished. There are still countless changemakers with divine visions who need culturally competent guidance, practical tools, and a trusted partner in their corner.
