When the Job You Loved Becomes Toxic—Knowing When to Walk Away
For years, I took great pride in my work. I poured my energy, creativity, and passion into my role, believing I was making a meaningful impact. But slowly, that same job became a source of anxiety, insomnia, stress, and self-doubt. I found myself questioning my worth, dreading each workday, and feeling like I was constantly walking on eggshells.
At first, I tried to brush it off. I convinced myself that things would improve, that I just needed to work harder, be more patient, or "prove myself" even more. But deep down, I knew that the environment had turned toxic, and no amount of effort on my part could change it.
The Subtle (and Not-So-Subtle) Signs of a Toxic Workplace
One of the most exhausting aspects of my job was navigating the microaggressions that came with being a woman of color in a predominantly white workspace. My ideas were often ignored, only to be validated when repeated by someone else. I was constantly held to higher standards than my peers, expected to overperform with fewer resources, and overlooked for opportunities I had rightfully earned.
Then there was the clique culture—the unspoken social hierarchy where certain coworkers could do no wrong while others, like me, were left on the outside. The mean-girl energy was real. I endured exclusion from key conversations, dismissive attitudes toward my achievements, and a work environment where I was made to feel like an outsider despite my dedication.
As if that weren’t enough, the pressure to do more with less was relentless. I was expected to juggle unreasonable workloads with little to no support, and when I managed to succeed despite the odds, my efforts were downplayed or ignored altogether.
All of this took a toll. I wasn’t just stressed—I was exhausted in a way that no amount of rest could fix. My confidence wavered. I began second-guessing myself, questioning whether I was good enough, smart enough, or strong enough to keep going.
One Month Later—I Can Breathe Again
It’s been one month since I left that job, and for the first time in a long time, I can truly breathe. The tightness in my chest is gone, and I no longer wake up dreading the day ahead. Instead, I feel light, free, and full of purpose again.
Stepping away from that toxic environment has given me the space to pour back into myself, to refill my cup, and to fully embrace my true passion—helping nonprofits thrive.
