Black History Month is more than a celebration of the past; it’s a call to action to honor the legacy of those who came before us while building a future worthy of their sacrifices. As we reflect on the progress, resilience, and triumphs of Black communities throughout history, it’s important to spotlight a vital yet often underrepresented part of our story: the history and impact of African American nonprofits.
The Vital Role of Nonprofits in Black Communities
Nonprofits have long been the lifeblood of Black communities, offering refuge, resources, and resilience in the face of systemic inequities. These organizations have played a pivotal role in fighting for civil rights, providing education, building economic opportunities, and addressing social injustices.
From the abolitionist societies of the 19th century to the grassroots organizations that fueled the Civil Rights Movement, African American nonprofits have consistently demonstrated that community-driven action can change the course of history.
Innovation and Advocacy in the Present Day
The story doesn’t end with the achievements of the past. Today, African American-led nonprofits continue to innovate, advocate, and transform lives—often with limited resources but limitless determination. They are tackling systemic challenges in areas such as education, health equity, economic empowerment, and technology, all while keeping our cultural heritage alive.

Through my decades of experience as a nonprofit leader and consultant, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of these organizations. I’ve seen how their work inspires hope, creates opportunity, and builds resilience. But I’ve also seen the barriers they face—from underfunding to systemic inequities—and the untold stories that need to be brought to light.
Announcing “Legacies of Persistence”
I am thrilled to share that I’m embarking on a new project that pays tribute to this legacy. My forthcoming book, Legacies of Persistence: A History of African American Nonprofits, will explore the stories of the individuals and organizations that have shaped our communities, sustained our families, and fought for our collective liberation.
This book will not only honor their contributions but also provide a blueprint for future generations to carry the torch forward. Legacies of Persistence is more than a history book; it’s a celebration of our tenacity, creativity, and vision. It’s a reminder that African American nonprofits are not only a testament to our past but also a foundation for our future.
